Ruby Rice is a full time artist. Her art begins with a vision and or felt sense. These are conceived through dream, improvisational performance, meditation, trance and movement as well as walks or swims in the natural world. Rice’s goal is to express the essence of the experience and to maintain full connection to this feeling throughout the entire process of creation. While working, she says that it feels like “I’m in a very expansive realm. I go to places where I am experiencing what I sense to be the core process of evolution.” Rice’s works are filled with fine details which are drawn, painted, photographed, embossed and sewed upon. Most of her work is deeply textured with fibers, roots and other found materials. The piece is then enlarged by two to five times its size and printed by the artist as a giclee (high quality archival print). With this transformation complete, her sense shifts, as she now has another and somehow an even more intimate perspective of her work. In this format Rice once again draws, paints and stitches layers upon layers until she has the feeling of completion, until the piece has indeed evolved.

“The process of bringing forth my visions, blending images with technology and then joining them with treasures from the natural world (creatures and plants) is fascinating and deeply satisfying. There is a coming together through the elements of my own humanity, my female knowing. Stated simply, a profound connection and honoring of all that is, takes place.” Ruby Rice 2009

Over the last thirty years, galleries throughout the United States have displayed Rice’s work. This past year her new work was shown and sold through the Casa Frela Gallery in Harlem, New York. At present, she is in a group show, “Works on Paper,” July 8th – August 10th at the Northampton Center for the Arts. Also, the Green Trees Gallery in Northfield, Massachusetts and Gallery in the Woods in Brattleboro, Vermont, represent her recent Visionary Art work.

Ruby Rice and her jazz musician husband, Bernard Jones, often collaborate in their shared studio space, the Visionary Healing Arts Sanctuary and Gallery,in Colrain, Massachusetts. It is open by appointment.
